HESA Research and Skills Committee Initiatives are Breaking Stereotypes

Health Science students are defying expectations—creating, baking, and researching through HESA’s programs that shape innovators, not just professionals.

Forget what you’ve heard—Health Science students aren’t just bookworms waiting for white coats. In less than a year, the Skills Team, part of HESA’s Research and Skills Committee, has been busy turning ordinary students into creators, innovators, and entrepreneurs.

Through hands-on workshops, students have transformed discarded plastics into useful pencil cases—a smart and creative take on sustainability. Others have learned the art of pastry-making, contributing to delicious treats that have become highlights at association events. Over 30 students have jumped in and gained real skills.

At the same time, the Research Team has been quietly shaping sharper minds—hosting webinars on research basics (notably, the Rise Summit), while making key resources accessible and sparking lively debates on tough topics. Together, both teams are helping students grow inside and outside the classroom.

These combined efforts add value to a degree and also build confidence, ignite creativity, and sharpen critical thinking. This is the kind of preparation that lasts long after graduation.

This momentum is just getting started. More workshops are coming up, projects are in the pipeline, and the next Rise Summit is just around the corner. Keep an eye out for it! Be part of a community that’s equipping themselves with innovative skills.

Who knows? The next skill you pick up might open a door you never knew existed.
