From Compassion to Commitment: HESA Codifies Care with the Someso Bill
We often say we care about student welfare, that when one of us struggles,
we all respond.
But too often, that response has been inconsistent, dependent on goodwill and
not grounded in structure. Under the leadership of President Samuel Tampanga Wepeah, the Someso Bill
is changing that.
This bill mandates that 10% of HESA’s annual income be automatically
allocated to the Someso Welfare Package. It transforms compassion from a
feeling into a policy. It turns intention into commitment. It gives our care a framework.
This isn’t just about a percentage of annual income. It’s about belief.
It is the belief that no student should face financial distress alone.
That behind every stethoscope and textbook stands a human being with real
needs.
That HESA’s purpose is not just to plan events or organize meetings, but to
carry its members when the weight becomes too heavy.
The Someso Bill does not ask for everything; it asks for enough.
Enough to make welfare support sustainable, no matter who holds office.
Enough to ensure the safety net does not unravel with every new administration.
This isn’t about rigid policy. It is about resilient care.
The bill allows flexibility. The Senate may review it. Future leaders may
increase the percentage.
But what they cannot do is reduce it below 10%.
The ground
is firm. The foundation has been laid.
Let us move beyond well-meaning words.
Let us codify our values.
Let us pass the Someso Bill.
And let it be said that in 2025, under the bold and thoughtful
leadership of President Samuel Tampanga Wepeah, HESA chose not just to
care, but to make care a constant.
