CoHS Beats CoHSS (Again)

CoHS Beats CoHSS (Again)

In classic rivalry fashion, CoHS reclaimed the 2025 Intercollegiate Debate trophy, sweeping awards and proving once again that when it matters most, Health Sciences delivers.

For the past few years, the SRC Intercollegiate Debate Tournament has been a back-and-forth battle between two strongholds: the College of Health Sciences (CoHS) and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CoHSS). In 2022, CoHSS took it. We came back in 2023. They returned the favour in 2024. This year, in true back-and-forth fashion, the 2025 trophy belongs to CoHS once again.

We’d already picked up a win earlier during SRC Week, a one-day debate contest where Kelvin “Opana” Damptey led his team to victory and was crowned Best Speaker. That gave us momentum. But this tournament was the big one.

It kicked off last Friday and ran through Sunday. Six rounds. Asian Parliamentary style. Three motions. Teams balloted on one and had just 15 minutes to prepare before going head-to-head.

CoHS showed up with two solid teams:

HESA A had Salima Sufyan, Jerry Elikplem, and Richard Acheampong.

HESA B had Kelvin Damptey, Prince-Dennis Atisu, and Kojo Acheampong.

HESA B didn’t drop a single round in the prelims—5 out of 5 wins. They fought through a tough semifinal and made it to the finals, where they met a familiar opponent: CoHSS. The defending champions. Again.

CoHSS was on Proposition, CoHS on Opposition. The clash was heated, but when it was over, the result was clear. CoHS won! We didn’t just win the debate. We cleaned up the awards too.

Kojo Acheampong was named Best Speaker of the tournament. Kelvin “Opana” Damptey came in second. Prince-Dennis Atisu placed third. And Salima Sufyan (from HESA A) took home Best Novice Speaker.

To top it off, all three of our judges qualified to break (meaning they were good enough to judge the final rounds) but since we had a team in the finals, they were respectfully stepped down to keep things fair.

Also worth mentioning: this makes Prince-Dennis a two-time intercollegiate champion. Back-to-back trophies for CoHS on his record.

This tournament was more than just a win. It was about proving our consistency, and reminding everyone that CoHS still holds its ground when it counts.

So yeah, the trophy is back home. CoHS all the way!
